Renovate Smarter: Start Smart

The most important work on a renovation happens before a single hammer swings. Neal's July 2025 article makes the case for a robust pre-construction process.

"I believe that investing into a pre-construction process before your renovation starts saves us time and money in construction, ultimately allowing us to deliver a project on schedule and on budget," Neal writes.

He describes timeline, scope and budget as the three legs of a stool: change one and the others move with it. Pre-construction is where those trade-offs get worked out, with your general contractor acting as consultant and advocate while the vision, scope, budget and design come into alignment.

Done well, this phase turns complexity into a clear construction plan, with materials selected early and problems solved on paper instead of on site.
